ตื่นแต่เช้าเลย นั่งดูทีวีไม่เห็นมีรายการดีๆเลยหยิบนิตยสารท่องเที่ยว Voyage: Travel & Lifstyle ฉบับเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ 2007ที่พ่อซื้อมาอ่านซักหน่อย อ่านไปจนเกือบท้ายเล่ม(หน้า133) ก็มาสะดุดกับคอลัมน์ Through My Eyes ที่เขียนโดย Christopher Wright กับ topic "G l o b a l   C u l t u r e ในทรรศนะของ Christopher Wright"

เค้าเขียนได้ดีทีเดียว ชอบความคิดของเค้า เพราะเราก็เรียน Intercultural Communication ก็เลยสนใจเป็นพิเศษ งั้นก็ขออนุญาตคัดลอกบทความนี้มาให้คนอื่นได้อ่านบ้าง

     "I've had the chance to experience Thai and Western culture from real life experiences and cross-cultural studies. Culture is divided by hardware and software. Hardware is what we can see and touch like temples, houses, architecture, arts, food, and clothing. Looking around, we can find a lot of Western culture in Thailand. Meanwhile, software is values, language, thoughts, viewpoints and feelings. In my point of view, Thai, like other Asians, have a hierarchy culture with a lot of gaps in society and communication is more topdown while Westerners have an equality culture. Everyone is equal.

     Another dimension of culture is relationship-oriented culture. Thais give more emphasis on good feelings and relationships than results or the tasks while Westerners have hard culture or result-oriented culture. There are so many "jai" (heart) words in Thai language. For example, the word 'understand' is when your mind gets something in the head while in Thai Khao Jai means getting it in the heart before the head. Thais are always "Kreng Jai" but Westerners are more striaghtforward or which is more positive but Thais think it is negative. When Thai people say yes, they mean no, and when they say no they mean yes! This is my joke with Western friends.

     Another difference is that Westerners have self culture like self-development, self-improvement, DIY or do it yourself but Thais have more of a group culture, always using connections and giving importance to the people in the group.

     However, what impresses me about Thai people is the friendliness. They're always concerned on feelings and warmth. They are friendly, service-minded and always take care of people. In many Western countries, people prefer a lot of privacy and private time and aged people are left alone but Thai people like to live as a group. People live in extended families.

     Once I was asked by a foreign kid where I lived and with whom. I told him I lived with my parents. He made a big laugh, saying hey, what? With parents? Still?

     Nowadays, Thai teenagers like to overexpress themselves but it is not the right expression in Thai culture. They think they copy foreigners but actually it's not what foreigners really do in their culture. One example is "Gig" or having several boyfriends or girlfriends which they think they follow foreigners or copy from Hollywood films. This idea seems to be widely and socially accepted but in many Western cultures, if they have a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife, they will stop with only that couple. If you have someone else, it's cheating, a very negative word.

     The world changes very fast. If we are stuck with only the hardware new cars, mobile phones or PCs but the software like language, culture and knowledge is not good enough, we will still be outdated."

ขอเขียนย่อหน้าสุดท้ายเป็น version ภาษาไทย (ที่เขียน version ภาษาอังกฤษ เพราะมันสั้นกว่าและพิมพ์ง่ายกว่า) เพื่อสรุปละกันเผื่อบางคนอ่านแล้วงง

เค้าสรุปว่า

"ปัจจุบัน โลกเราเปลี่ยนเร็วมาก ถ้าเรามัวแต่ไปจมกับพวก hardware ซื้อรถใหม่ โทรศัพท์ใหม่ คอมพิวเตอร์ ทุกอย่างดูดีหมด ภายนอกดูดี แต่ภายในยังไม่ดี ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องภาษา ความรู้ วัฒนธรรมที่น่าปรับมาใช้ เรารับ hardware ทางด้านวัฒนธรรมของฝรั่งมาเยอะ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นรถรา ตึกรามบ้านช่อง เสื้อผ้า เราก็ต้องเริ่มรับ software เข้ามาด้วย เพื่อตามให้ทัน เช่น เรื่อง result-oriented culture การเอาจริงเอาจังกับเรื่องงานเน้นผลลัพธ์ ถ้าไม่รับมาเราก็จะกลายเป็นประเทศที่ล้าหลัง เพราะมี gap ระหว่าง software กับ hardware เหมือนคอมพิวเตอร์ ที่ทั้งสองส่วนต้องไปด้วยกัน เพราะปัจจุบันมันคือ global culture"

ผมได้ซื้อหนังสือของคริสมาอ่านอยู่เหมือนกัน แง่คิดเรื่องการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษของคนไทยนี่ผมอ่านแล้วได้ประโยชน์+เห็นด้วยมากๆ เลย  ส่วนแง่คิดเรื่อง cross-cultural studies ของคริสนี่..มีทั้งเห็นด้วยและไม่เห็นด้วยครับ รู้สึกว่าเค้าสรุปแบบกว้างๆ ไปหน่อยว่าคนไทยจะเป็นอย่างนู้น ฝรั่งเป็นอย่างนี้(ผรั่งก็มีหลายชาติ-อย่างอิตาลีกับสวีเดนก็ไม่เหมือนกัน) ส่วนคนไทยผมก็เห็นว่ามีหลากหลายแบบนะ

เหมือนคริสเขาจะเชียร์ฝรั่งมากไปนิด เผอิญผมเป็นพวก"เอเซียนิยม"อ่ะ
